Included below are my initial and final drafts of my ENC1102 Research Proposal.
Reflection
- Describe the purpose of your work and the effect you want it to have on your reader. This aspect of my ePortfolio serves as the proverbial foundation of my whole research project. It’s arguably the most important part because it tells the audience where my research idea came from, how the concept interests me and how I intend to immerse myself into a rhetorical community to answer the question in a way fitting of the class’ purpose. Including both the initial and final draft keeps my research process public and allows my audience – likely my professor and my fellow students – to see how I came to this research idea/question and provide any feedback if needed.
- Describe your process of working on the Research Proposal. The process of working on this research proposal took some time. The original sources I wrote my research proposal around didn’t completely fit the exact analytical lens I was hoping for, but the week between the rough and final draft deadlines allowed me more time to fine tune my proposal in a way that more clearly fits my topic. I found writing within the genre easy because of its strict structure. All I had to do was let my sources fit within the genre and the rest of the writing came naturally. Overall, I really enjoyed the process.
- What changes did you make? As mentioned in the last response, I changed one of my two sources to a more fitting one. It breaks down the speech Will Smith gave after winning best actor for his leading role in King Richard, which is a similar type of topic to mine (Demi Moore’s speech for The Substance). It analyzes the speech in a different way than I intend to break mine down, but overall it definitely applies more then my first source.
- Reflect on the course outcomes. This project exemplifies the course outcome Reflection, which states that students will ” . . . be able to negotiate differences in and act with intention on feedback from readers when drafting, revising, and editing their writing.” The feedback I received during my one-on-one advising meeting with my professor definitely helped me work through some of the more difficult parts of this assignment. After submitting my final draft, I feel much happier with my progress in the project so far and I felt that the genre of the research proposal definitely proved its worth.
